ZANE JOHNSON WINS GUS
WOODUL MEMORIAL MATCH
COOKEVILLE,
TENNESSEE - Zane Johnson from the White County Woodsmen Trap and
Skeet club in Sparta
is the winner of the GUS WOODUL MEMORIAL SKEET SHOOT held recently at the Bend
of the River. This match is held each
year in memory of Gus Woodul who loved to teach anyone how to break skeet clay
targets. Gus Woodul died three years ago
after a long bout with cancer. The match
is sponsored by the Woodul family and the proceeds go to the Woodsmen team.
The
match was 50 targets. Zane Johnson shot
11 targets better than last year to win with a 45 with and long runs of 13 and
6. Second place went to Cortis Jarvis
from Cookeville also with a 45 but long runs of 13 and 1. The long run is the number of targets
beginning with the first shot until a miss.
Or counting from the last shot forward until a miss and is often used to
break ties. Third place was won by Eric Johnson from the Woodsmen with a 44.
There
were three categories , Open, Junior and Ladies. The Juniors this year were all from the
Woodsmen Club. First Junior went to
Jamison Helton with a 41. Second Junior was taken by Jayden Keith with a
40. And Tristan Whittenburg was third
with 39.
The
Ladies were lead by Callie
Julian from Pall Mall with a 29.
Meredith Rawleigh with the woodsmen and the score of 25.
Skeet
is a fun game with shotguns shooting at clay targets. It started around 1926 with hunters looking
for practice during the off season. It
became popular and today it is an Olympic sport. It is a game suitable for any age person large
enough to safely shoot a shotgun and you can participate a long time. As with many shooting sports you do not have to be really
big or strong.
The
weather was great this year with light clouds so the
sun was. not a factor and the temperature was great.
A
special thanks to Sponsors Candance and Rob Woodul, volunteers Scott Miller,
Joe Cameron, David Hargis, coaches Cody and Jennifer Roberts, Felicia Steel
head cook and all the parents and shooters that made for a great shoot..
