CURT MABERRY WINS GUS WOODUL MEMORIAL SKEET SHOOT

Cookeville, TN – 28 participants from 4 states converged on the Bend of the River for the 2nd ANNUAL GUS WOODUL MEMORIAL SKEET SHSOOT.  This is an annual match in memory of Gus Woodul, a long-time skeet enthusiast that died in 2022 from a long bout with cancers.

This year the weather was just right for a skeet mach.  The temperature was in the 60s with partly cloudy skies and light winds.

Skeet is a game with shotguns shooting at clay targets thrown in the air. The score is the number of targets broken. Skeet is an Olympic sport enjoyed by shooters around the world.

The match had three categories, Open, Junior and Ladies.

Curt Maberry from Livingston was the Open winner with a 45 out of 50.  Second place went to Warren Brandes with 40 and a long run of 12.  Third went to Jayden Keith from Sparta at 40 and a long run of 6.  Curtis Jarvis from Cookeville was fourth with a 39.  The long run is a method of breaking tie scores.  The long run is the number of targets hit from  the first shot until a miss or the number of targets hit after the last miss counting from the last shot.

The ladies were led for the second year in a row by Nan Kruer from Jeffersonville, Indiana with a 37.  Second place went to Callie Julian from Cookeville shooing in a match for the first time with the score of 27.

Ty Measles from  Spencer was first place Junior with a 36.  Zane Johnson from Spencer was second at 34.  Abram Lawson from Sparta won the tie breaker over Chet Cody from Walling with a 33 and long run of 2.

Most of the Junior shooters were from the White County Woodmen Cub.  All the proceeds from the match went to the White County Woodmen.

Lunch was served and much fun was had by all.  Everyone vowed to return for the match next year on October 19, 2024.
