                   JAYDEN GRIDER WINS ‘POSSUM ROUNDUP

 

 

     COOKEVILLE TN – Jayden Grider from Baxter won the 2024 ‘Possum Roundup at the Bend of the River. The match was a BBgun three position at 5 meters.  Jayden’s score was 483.  Cody McCloud from Monterey was second with a 471.9. And third was won by Josiah Fortunato from Cookeville with 463.8.  It was an exciting match with the lead changing all the time.

You may wonder about the decimal scores.  Each bullseye has ten scoring rings.  Each ring is broken into 10 parts giving each the possible score of 10.9 per shot.  There are 10 shots in ten minutes for a  possible score of 109.0 for each position.

The fun begins with the prone position.  This year Zander Salther from Hilham had the high score of 99.2  Josie Grider from Baxter was second at 98.8 and close by was Zachery Rodriquez from Crawford with 98.7.  Charlie Pardue says “that is some mighty fine shooting”.

Next comes standing.  It is usually the lowest scoring position since there is less support.  The scores were still outstanding.  First went to Maddie Hoover from Springfield with 89.6.  It took 89.5  by Abbie Jude from Centerville  for second.  Wilson Pypper from Livingston managed an 89.1 for third.  There were only tenths of a point between places.

Sitting has highest scores most of the time.  Today was no exception.  Abbie Jude was first with a 99.9.  Second had a tie by Elias Breece from Centerville and Bryson Grant from Cookeville  with a 97.7.  The tie is broken by the score on the last shot in that position.  Breece won with a10.8 over Grant’s 10.1.

Kneeling is the last position.  The scores were as close as the other positions.  First was an easy 98.2 by Gage Kilgore from Livingston.  He has been shooting only a short time.  He. Had 6 shots over 10.0.  Second went to Zander Sather with a 93.3 and a 10.3 on the last shot putting Josie Grider in third with a 93.3 and 9.7 on the last shot.

In addition to the four shooting positions there is a quiz on gunology and safety.  You must be a good shot and do good on the test to win.  The top score was a 92.  There was a four-way tie,  After applying the tie breakers, Natalie Phillips from Monterey came in first.  Lilly McCloud from Monterey was second and Khloe Phann from Baxter was third. Takota McAllister from Centerville was fourth.

The team scores were the top 4 shooters from each club.  The Awesome ‘Possums from Bend of the River were first with 1860.2. The team had Jayden Grider, Josiah Fortunato, Josie Grider, and Zander Sather.   Second was Hickman County 4-H at 1768.2 and third club was Wilson Elementary 4-H and 1759.9 points.

The Daniel Shakleford award goes to the shooter that has the highest shooting score.  It is in memory of the shooter from Manchester that died in the middle of the shooting season.  This match it was won by Jayden Grider with 385.0.

Shooters that were on a team at the Nationals last year are not eligible for the matches this year.  A separate match is held for this Champion group. These shooters were Jaylyn Grider from Baxter, Callie Jude from Centerville, Ariel Gibbs from Centerville, Gunny Helton from Hilham, Emma Noble from Baxter, Piper Winter from Greenbriar, Annelyse Hall from m Friendsville and Elijah Nobel from Baxter. Jaylyn Grider was first with a 482.4.
